Best Free Way to Organize Your Families’ Finances

Posted by - February 4th, 2012

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of DoughMain.com for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Have you heard of doughmain.com?

I hadn’t until recently and I am so impressed with their mission, which is to empower children to become better educated about money and financial topics.  We all know that much of our country’s financial crisis was because we as ADULTS failed to use money appropriately – what better opportunity to learn from our mistakes than to teach our children the right way to handle money?

Doughmain.com has some really fun games for kids like the financial responsibility game – they help kids better understand money while having fun at the same time. I encourage you to check out TheFunVault.com, SandDollarCity.com, and IRuleMoney.com – we were having fun playing them this morning!

In addition to these games, Doughmain.com provides family organizer tools that help in the following ways:

  1. There is an allowance tool that allows your children to accumulate “Dough Points” for doing chores and acting responsibly, and they can “cash in” for video game time, TV time, a trip to the mall – whatever you decide.  So fun!
  2. The chore tracker tool makes it easy for you to set up chores and keep the kids on a schedule. You can also integrate this tool to let the kids see how many “Dough Points” they’ll accumulate for each successful task completed.
  3. The online family calendar is color-coded so each family member can take ownership of the tasks that must completed in a given day, week, or month. And all of these tools can be accessed from your mobile phone, making it very easy to manage!

I encourage you to sign up for your own doughmain.com account by going HERE; use DOUGH as the reference when you sign up and you’ll be entered to win a 0 VISA gift card, which will be announced on their BLOG. This is a really fun tool and after playing around with it this morning, I’m really excited about this for all my readers.

Below is a sample screenshot of The Ford Family calendar and it’s fun color-coding.  Enjoy everyone!

US Pass Ports – Very Easy To Get

Posted by - February 4th, 2012

A passport is an internationally recognized travel document that verifies your identity. In addition, it’s a document that requests another government to allow you to visit their country and be afforded assistance and protection. In the United States, US pass ports are issued by the US government through the State Department.

When Is It Needed

Such a document is required whenever one needs to travel outside the US. It provides the holder with a guarantee that everything is in order to visit another country. It is also required to enter Canada and Mexico.

E-Passports

How does one go about getting a US Passport? The first step is applying for one. Forms for passport application can be found online as well as at the US Department of State. The website lists specific instructions for first time applicants and for those who simply need to renew their passports. As of August 2007, the US has only been issuing e-passports. These are the same as the traditional ones with the added inclusion of a small computer chip.

Download Your Application

You can complete the required form after downloading and printing it. Apart from the website and the US Department State office, you can also apply at the US Post office, libraries and at online passport assistance sites. One thing to remember after filling out the form is to wait for the instruction of an official passport agent to put your signature on it. Never sign without being given the instruction and you signature must be witnessed by an agent.

Primary Documents

The application must be submitted in person, even by minors under 16. These can be submitted to any of the passport acceptance facilities and passport agencies. These locations can be found through an online search. Evidence of US citizenship must be presented. This can be through a certified birth certificate or a previous passport. If you don’t have the primary documents, secondary evidence may be submitted.

Other Acceptable Documents

Acceptable identification must also be submitted such as a driver’s license or an undamaged, previously issued US Passport. Government or current military identification is also accepted as primary identification. Once again, if you don’t have a primary identification document, there are several secondary ones from which to choose.

A Personal Witness

A witness who identifies you may also be presented as a primary form of evidence. This witness must fill out an “affidavit of identifying witness” form in front of a passport renewal agent. This witness will swear to your identity so it must be someone who has known you for at least two years and also must be a US Citizen or permanent resident. You also have to provide a photocopy of your identity card along with passport photographs.

Warby Parker: An Winning E-commerce Strategy Online and Off

Posted by - February 2nd, 2012

MSLK works with our clients to build great experiences with every touch-point of their brand, from identity design through to websites, packaging, and promotions online and offline. Over the years we’ve found that the best promotions and websites are really only possible when there is a truly unique offering, the only limit is with the brands themselves. When we see a brand everything right, it’s exciting.

I came across such a brand during a search for eyeglasses. After numerous visits to online stores and brick & morters, I found the whole process to be draining: too many choices, and a nagging sense that things were more expensive than they should be. Then I remembered an article I had read some time ago about a startup making vintage-inspired frames with prescription lenses for only .00. I began my Google search using the keywords “New York Times vintage eyewear website” which lead me right to the article.

Now I’m the proud owner of a wonderful pair of stylish, vintage-inspired frames from Warby Parker. I only paid .00, and found the whole experience to be, well… fun, which is a far cry from my previous experiences. Here’s why:

Great website
The site is an exercise in simplicity. Focused content, clear layout, pitch-perfect photography, clever writing, and just the right amount of technology. By technology, I’m referring to an cool tool which allows you to use your webcam to snap a picture of your face, and then map several designs onto your face. I was very skeptical of this, yet it worked seamlessly and was actually quite helpful.

The website did a really great job of establishing that the company had a clear aesthetic from their products through to their demographic. I knew right away upon my arrival that I wanted to stay here. We tell our clients all the time that your website is your virtual storefront to the world, and it’s great to see a company truly grasping, creating an experience about you, not them.

Innovative Concept
They have two main methods of connecting you to the perfect frame. The first is the “Virtual Try-On” described above, and the other is a “Try It Before You Buy It” program where you can test out up to five pairs at home. Again, they made the process easy to understand and execute with one method pushing the envelope of technology, the other is an offline method giving you the comfort of trying things on in your own home.

Making it Easy
The “Try It Before You Buy It” method comes with a well-packaged box of frames and a witty card describing the simple steps to take. They also include a return address label to make it even easier to send everything back.

Passion
For every pair of glasses sold, they donate a pair to someone in need via a program called VisionSpring. MSLK  encourages all of our clients to find causes they support or partner with, and this is a perfect example of a well-matched one.

Extras Make All the Difference
I received an email last week saying “It’s Here. The 2011 Annual Report: 100% Full of Statistics, Facts, Figures, Maps and More!” It took me to a microsite of incredibly well-designed, clever, and informative statistics from the company’s past year.

Targeted Marketing
This last point is one that I have mixed feelings about personally, yet is undeniably effective. Immediately after first visiting Warby Parker’s site, I started seeing ads for them on just about every blog and news site I visited. I soon realized that this was no mere coincidence, it is part of a highly-targeted advertising service called TellApart which tracks your web visits and presents ads from those sites to you on other sites. Weeks later I am still seeing Warby Parker ads everywhere, even though I’ve already made the purchase. We think this approach is going to be essential to any online e-tailing strategy.

MODEL WATCH: Local model Veronica L. wins MIM contract, looks to OFW casting call

Posted by - February 2nd, 2012

Shop Talk is written by OM senior editor Dayanti Karunaratne and Sarah Fischer, OM account executive and fashion maven.

Every day we seem to receive another announcement about a casting call or new up-and-coming model in the area. We’re not sure if it’s because of the steady growth of Ottawa Fashion Week or the skyrocketing success of models like Herieth Paul — either way, we figured it was time to poke our nose into the world of modeling and take the pulse on the local scene.

Veronica L. recently won a full modeling contract with local agency MIM. Photo courtesy MIM.

This week, we tracked down the latest name making headlines: Veronica L. She’s just 13 years old, but has just landed a free modeling contact with Models International Management (MIM). At 5’11″, she easily surpasses the industry standard of 5’8″ and sports an athletic frame honed from years practicing synchonized swimming and gymnastics.

While MIM spokesperson Jessica D’Angelo describes Veronica as humble, she made no mistake about her talent:

“In front of the camera, Veronica had a serious fire about her,” says D’Angelo. “She was very shy, but so open to putting herself out there.”

Veronica beat out over 60 people — men and women, kids and teens — at the event, held at Bayshore Shopping Centre.

She describes the event as fun and “not stressful at all.” She found out about the contest through her friend, Megan W., who currently models with MIM — plus her mother has some modeling experience, so maybe it runs in the family!

Next up for Veronica: the Ottawa Fashion Week casting call.

We touched base with OFW spokesperson Christine Achampong to gauge Veronica’s chances — and get this scoop on this event, which takes place this weekend.

She certainly fits the height requirement — Christine also mentioned the 5’8″ industry standard, though she added that some designers make specific model requests that reflect their current collection.

“Fashion designers are artists – they’re inspired and influenced by beauty, regardless of its form,” says Christine. “Certain designers like to diverge away from the industry standard and because of this, we like to encourage models of all sizes, ethnicities, ages and experience to come to our open casting.”

Last season nearly 400 people came out for the OFW casting call, and 100 were chosen. For those interested in participating, Christine has the following advice:

1. Be confident! It can be a little bit nerve-wracking to be put on the spot, but the worst that can happen is getting a “no” from designers.

2. Have a good attitude. Designers have worked hard on putting together their collections, volunteers, and staff have worked hard on putting together this casting and negative energy shows on the runway.

3. Have fun! Fashion is not rocket science — we’re not saving lives, we’re all coming together to celebrate an art form and enjoy ourselves in the process.

As for Veronica, she has her three-inch heels picked out for the occasion and we wish her the best of luck!
