Type Of Treatment

One question that needs to be answered is whether they need inpatient or outpatient. Some of the considerations for deciding this is how severe the problem is, whether there is anyone available as support, the ability of the patient to be consistent in treatment goals, and how much money and/or insurance is available for funding. These questions must be answered regardless of the age of the person seeking help.

Factors

One important consideration is the support system available and family dynamics. If the family is not equipped to give good support, then inpatient care may be the only option. If the family support system is strong, and counselors are available, outpatient care might work. The young adult must be committed to the course of treatment, however.

Approaches

Different treatment styles are available for young people. Some are like a residential boarding school. With these, the focus is much stronger on academics than it is in other styles. Outdoor, fitness styles, or wilderness styles, focus more on the physical rigors of survival. This helps the patient deal with emotional situations through physical activity. Some styles of treatment are more like luxury hotels or spas. Then, there is the psychiatric hospital style of treatment, with its stricter control and medical intervention.

Costs

Any or all of these can be effective. It depends in part on the preference of the care-seeker, as well as what can be afforded. The preferences of the person who needs the care should be taken into strong consideration, as well as their abilities and needs. If they have goals of college and a career, then placement in a boarding school style is the best choice. Many facilities only minimally address schooling while working through emotional and addiction issues. This may mean the young person will get behind and have a hard time with college admission and educational success.

Addiction

More intensive care (residential drug clinic) may be needed if the addiction is severe, if emotional issues are present, and/or if the family is dysfunctional. In this setting, the emotional issues are more fully addressed. In the event of severe emotional involvement, it may be necessary to delay attention to educational or physical issues and address the emotional ones first.

Wilderness Approach

The wilderness or fitness style approaches may well be beneficial to some. The focus on surviving in the wilderness, or the intense physical activity, may help the individual focus on something beside the addictions that are controlling them. The intense activity releases chemicals in the brain that help to give that euphoria and good feeling that sometimes drive addictions.

This kitchen is one of four innovative kitchens featured in the February 2012 Interiors edition.

When they married seven years ago, Scott Fraser and Marion Beckett headed up a blended family of three teen girls, a couple of dogs, and some cats. At the time, a spacious house in the suburbs made sense.

But a few years ago, when they became empty nesters, Fraser, an IT consultant, and Beckett, a vice-president with TD Bank, started looking for a smaller house in the city. “We saw quite a few,” says Fraser, “but nothing seemed quite right.”

That’s when they began looking to build and came across an empty lot in Chinatown. In late 2009, the couple hired Hidden City Design to design their house and manage the building process. “It was a great collaboration,” Fraser says.

Staff at Hidden City, in turn, suggested Frank Prendergast of Neoform Art Cabinetry to help with the kitchen design. “We met with Frank and discussed what we wanted,” Fraser remembers. “He had a clear vision of what to do, and we trusted him completely.”

The sleek kitchen boasts veneered walnut cabinetry and a dramatic eating bar. The couple knew they wanted the bar to feature metal (to complement the stainless-steel countertops) and wood but left the details up to Prendergast. “He knew we had four stools,” says Fraser, “but that was all the guidance we gave him.”

The couple were amazed by the end result. Four solid walnut “place settings” are held in place by magnets and supported by a raw metal shelf, a brilliant solution that will allow the couple to change the look in a few years’ time — should they wish to — by simply removing the place settings and replacing them with another magnetized counter.

Benefits

There are many benefits to having the document. There are many places around the world that you can’t travel to without it. This is even more the case in today’s world. In past years, you could enter countries like Canada without having passports. Today, though, that isn’t a possibility. Any type of travel internationally requires you carrying one with you.

Easy To Obtain

Lucky for potential travelers, it isn’t too tough at all to get passports. In the majority of cases, you can put your application in locally. It’s a bit trickier if you’re traveling soon. If you’ve planned your date of travel for less than two weeks from now, you should schedule an appointment to go to a regional passport agency. And if you’re outside of the United States, it’s still possible to obtain one by getting in touch with the consulate or embassy.

Valuable Document

You may believe that it is not necessary to have one at all times. In fact, it is recommended that those who have family living or traveling abroad, are considering a vacation internationally, or have a job that could lead to international travel always maintain their passports and make sure theirs is valid. Already having a valid document will save you substantial time and money in the event of an unexpected business trip, a family emergency, or even in the event you come across a great airline deal.

Foreign Country Requirements

Some countries, in fact, require that you have yours valid for at least six month past the planned dates of travel. As a result, it is recommended that approximately nine months prior to the expiration date, you renew. You can prevent any unforeseen problems by already being prepared in this way.

Valid Period

Your document will be valid for ten years in the event that it was issued when you were over 16. If it was issued when you were 15 years old or younger, it will be valid for five years. As a result, you won’t need to renew yours often if you make sure to keep it on track.

Emergency Situations

There are still possible solutions if you do have an emergency and don’t have a child pas port that’s valid. You can appear at a passport agency for emergency service in person in the event of a life and death emergency involving serious injury or illness or death to a member of your immediate family in a country that for travel requires a passport. You might still have to provide documentation regarding the emergency.
