Why New Designer Drugs Are Unsafe

Posted by - April 5th, 2012

There are always new types of drugs coming onto the marketplace. This is a very dangerous trend as most of these new drugs are unregulated and have had little amounts of testing performed on them. One of the newest drug crazes to hit the streets is called Kratom. This is a leaf from the orient that users chew to get an effect similar to that of opiates. However, it is now being reported that the leaf can have very serious side effects. It is not known yet if this leaf can lead to an addiction. However, if a person does develop an addiction, it is important for them to get help at a drug detoxification center.

New Drugs

People are beginning to develop substance abuse to these new designer drugs in the same way that they develop addictions to other drugs. The first few times they use kratom they experience the positive effects. However, as they continue to use it, the effects become duller and duller. This makes people take more and more of the drug to obtain the desired effect.

Kratom Kraze

Many people in the United States are taking this new drug in combination with other harmful substances. This can be very dangerous as no one really knows the consequences of this drug yet. This is just another reason why these new designer drugs are so incredibly dangerous. Ingesting any substance that you know little about is not a very smart thing to do. However, that is exactly what people all over the country are doing with designer drugs.

Consequences

Kratom can become very addictive and just has some ridiculous side effects. So, the drug that was supposed to boost confidence and make social situations super successful instead induces anxiety, insomnia, intestinal illnesses, depression, and the ever popular loss of libido. Look’s like that addiction backfired. In addition to dependency, overdoses can also occur. Overdoses bring on symptoms like hallucinations, depression, delusions, more intestinal problems, constipation, dry mouth, aggression and tremors are also common as well as listlessness.

Kratom Withdrawal

Withdrawal from Kratom is basically identical to that of heroin. Chills, goose bumps, muscle aches and body pain all over are just some of the wonderful attributes of going through Kratom detox. Individuals are arriving in emergency rooms with these symptoms and mystifying doctors until they come clean about Kratom use. However, many doctors have not heard of this substance which makes it even more dangerous.

Status

Between 2010 and 2011 nine deaths were associated with the use of Kratom, although it was undetermined whether Kratom was the main culprit for the deaths or one of the added substances in the mixture. Currently Kratom is a controlled substance in Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Denmark, and Poland.

Posted by - March 26th, 2012

One of the most interesting and amazing places in the world to visit is China. When you are in China you can visit the famous Terracotta Army. It is one of the most incredible tourist attractions anywhere in the country. It is important to remember, however, that anyone who is interested in overseas travel must first have a valid United States passport. Anyone who has a valid American passport can travel freely all over the world. If you have a passport that is expired, you will need to find a passport agency that offers services such as passport renewals.

Passports

Anyone who does any international travel knows how incredible important passports are. If you lose your passport while overseas, you will need to obtain a replacement passport before you are allowed to return home. It is incredibly important to keep your United States passport in a safe location while you are traveling. Since it is so important to have a American passport when you travel internationally, it is vital that they are kept in a safe place when they are not in use.

History

The famous Terracotta Army in China is one of the most famous and intriguing tourist attractions in the entire country. The statues are in place to pay tribute to the armies of Qin Shi Huang who was the very first emperor of China. The tallest figures are generals, and other figures include horses, chariots, and warriors. Some estimates regarding figures suggest that there are over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots, 520 horses and about 150 cavalry horses. There are multiple pits in which these figures are buried. Other figures include strongmen, musicians, acrobats and officials.

Sites

There are four pits that house the Terracotta Army. The first pit holds an army of about 6,000 figures and has eleven passage ways. The second pit has the cavalry and infantry units in addition to many war chariots; it is believed to be a representative of a military guard. Pit three serves as the command post; it contains high ranking officers and features a war chariot. The fourth pit is empty; it appears to have been left unfinished. There are a large number of other pits that aided in composing the necropolis that have also been excavated.

Visiting Xian And The Terracotta Army

The Terracotta Army and other figures can be visited at the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum Site Park which houses many of the Terracotta Army finds. It contains the major sites that have been discovered including the ritual sacrificial pits, the Museum of Terracotta Acrobatics, the Museum of Terracotta Civil Officials and the Museum of Stone Armour as well as the museum of Bronze Chariot and Horse.

AN OFFICE WE LOVE: McMillan ad agency’s impressive renovation is inspired by Mad Men

Mod Men (and Women): Inspired by the mid-century modern look and the television show Mad Men, McMillan ad agency undertakes a renovation that makes it even more fun to come to work. By Daniel Drolet. Photography by Peter Fritz and Marc Fowler.

This office was featured in the 2012 Interiors edition. See more photographs and read the full story in the print edition.

Stimulating the flow of creative juices was one of the goals of a major renovation at McMillan, an Ottawa ad agency that occupies 12,000 square feet over two floors of a heritage building at 541 Sussex Drive.

The redesign, which involved one of the two floors the company occupies, was inspired by the mid-century modern look and the television show Mad Men. The result is a space that is open and airy, a space that lends itself to people getting together to bounce ideas off one another.

The concept was developed by Serina Fraser of Clear Interior Designs. Company president Gordon McMillan talks about how he, his staff, and Fraser went about creating the coolest office on the block.

THE PANIC ROOM: The firm’s business cards say, “I’m listening.” The triptych created by senior art director Michael Zavacky is both a play on the company motto and a tip of the hat to artist Roy Lichtenstein, whose comic-strip-like images define mid-century pop art. The Tulip armchairs by Eero Saarinen are mid-century classics, as is the coffee table by Isamu Noguchi. Photography by Peter Fritz.

How did you decide on the theme?

I was at a TED Conference* in Palm Springs, and we went on a tour of mid-century modern homes. I was fascinated. It reminded me of all the cheap and tawdry stuff that was around when I was a kid. Plus there’s a subtle Mad Men theme. In the early 1960s — the Mad Men era — advertising went through a strong transition. So it seemed to us a reasonable theme. We did the Panic Room first, and people went, “Wow! I really like that.” I didn’t really consult the staff about it, but I knew some of them were very interested in mid-century modern. The vast majority of our staff are in their 20s and 30s, so for them, this is totally new. (* TED stands for technology, entertainment, and design, and TED is a non-profit group that sponsors regular conferences that bring together thinkers and practitioners from these three fields. The idea is to share talents, resources and, above all, ideas.)

Where did you splurge?

We had Michael Zavacky, our senior art director, create a triptych inspired by Roy Lichtenstein. Another splurge was the Céline Dion Memorial Ballroom — it has a fireplace and walnut insets and custom furniture. In some ways, it’s all a splurge when you know that when the lease runs out, you can’t take it with you.

Is there anything you are pleasantly surprised with?

The Panic Room. It’s a great space for brainstorming. One wall is a chalkboard. The wall was first painted with a magnetic primer, and over top of that, they painted chalkboard paint, so the chalkboard is magnetic. I didn’t think it would work, but it does — you can put metal clips on the wall and they stick. It’s pretty cool. Read More »
